Bad Blogger

Man how long has it been since I last posted anything! I’m terrible at this blogging malarkey, probably because I’m aware that only my mum and hardcore friends actually want to know what I’m thinking, and that’s mainly due to the obligation that comes from years of emotional investment.

The last time I posted anything was before the exhibition in July (Which went pretty well thanks!). Since then I’ve been getting emails from other young artists asking for advice about the illustration industry (…I know, who do I think I am!). I remember when I exhibited at New Designers in 2009; I really looked up to the One Year On lot, especially Lizzie Mary Cullen. Every piece displayed was so professional and the designers appeared to have so much confidence which I assumed was fortified by a formidable amount of experience. I feared that I could never reach the same stage, which was why I was stunned when I was selected for 2010′s One Year On.

Eventually the show came around and I suddenly found myself required to dish out nuggets of wisdom from the huge bank of experience I felt I should have acquired by now. In reality I felt only 10% more informed than my bright eyed interrogators. The truth was I assumed the panel must have made a mistake with my application. What if it turned out I was there due to an administrative typo and they actually wanted ‘Bea Made’? I thought they were expecting this enigmatic artist who could shit out commissions faster than she could get them, and people would be selling their own kids and body parts just to afford her services. Then I turn up, Lea Wade, an overly honest illustrator who spent approximately 5 hours just trying to decide the best way to hang up her paintings.

Thankfully this bout of self consciousness only lasted until I started talking to my fellow exhibitioners. Of course, there were the lucky few who had done exceptionally well during the year, but everyone else, like me was equally nervous that they hadn’t achieved as much as they felt they should. It was great, as soon as I knew I was on the same page as everyone my professionalism suddenly kicked in, and probably for the first time this year I felt like this was now my job as opposed to my hobby. The show was great; I had so many good chats, made a few sales, and loads of people were getting excited about my work. I also had to repress a squeal of delight when Lizzie, the winner of 2009’s One Year On showed up and told me that my unfortunate lil pug dog character Matilda had become one of her most favourite images ever.

So basically the last couple of months have been good, I don’t wanna get all sentimental though so I’ll sum it up like this. Things aren’t as awesome as I want, but life is definitely heading in that direction.

Anyways, if there’s any fresh faced illustrators who stumble across this post and actually read it (especially those trying to snap out of the anti-climax of graduating), I wanted to give you one piece of advice. Stay social! Get on Twitter and talk to other illustrators. When you hide yourself away it’s easy to assume that everyone is so much further ahead, when the likelihood is that your imagination tends to make people more successful than they actually are. Twitter has been a bit of a godsend for me this year, it’s not all about idiots updating you on how many pieces of toast they burnt today-lolololol! If you’re not on there, then ignore the stigma and sign up, then start looking up illustrators and magazines & companies you want to work with. Here are a few people every good illustrator should have on their follow list…

@hellocreatives – A bunch of bloody lovely professionals by day, who run this awesome group by night, dedicated to spreading good vibes and helping people get to where they want to be.  HYC Blog

@Nat_o /@Illustration_r – When she isn’t creating beautiful works of art, Natsuki can be found organising themed projects for other illustrators to join in with for her Illustration Rally blog. Illustration Rally

@Sandradieckmann – Another fantastic illustrator who creates projects and welcomes other artists to join in. At the moment she has two, If I was you and Haus Stories.

@jason_m_stone /@designstufdaily – Jason Stone, a UK designer runs  Designstuffdaily. A blog which aims to combine a variety of design related stuff. It currently features an eclectic mix of designers, illustrators and artists.

@illo_island – Thomas James is an artist who runs a blog called, Escape from Illustration Island; A particularly brilliant resource for illustrators old and new which has tutorials, interviews and all sorts of helpful advice.

Oh, and finally you should add me too! @jammilicious. Go do it now, I wanna see those tweets!

Lea

P.S

Since the show, I’ve got my first ever PAID commission! It was such a relief not to hear the words “There’s no money; you do this for free right?” I hope I never hear them again!

E-Mote~I-Con

E-mote really hate’s his new next door neighbour I-con.

I-con’s harmless really but he’s a bit of an egotistical twerp due to his denial that technology has moved on since he was created. Back in the day, his kind were, as the Queen would say, ’the dog’s bollocks’, which has led to a rather jumped up opinion of himself and a tendency to unironically repeat outdated pop culture sayings, such as “Yo Daddio”, “Whazzup!” and “…..NOT!” in an effort to remain “Down wit da kidz!” .

E-mote likes to imagine how I-con’s head would violently explode (or implode, either is good)  if a Robot equipped with a touch screen moved into the street.

She’s at it again…

Just some background on these guys.

The lil Yellow dude covered in flowers and colourful stickers is Sadface. He’s a pretty upbeat positive type of fellow whose monitor unfortunately broke 1 day after his warranty expired. Ever since then he’s never been able to display any emotion other than sadness.

The red guy next to him is E-mote,  His hot headed flatmate and best friend, I’ll have more to say on E-mote in the next post.

Finally, the mental woman scattering  joy is Daisy, Sadface & E-mote’s neighbour and local busy body. She used to be a professional leg model but nowadays she’s a perfect housewife and armchair psychiatrist. She simply refuses to believe that Sadface’s facial problem is a technical one and spends a good deal of her time keeping him away from water and tin openers incase he tries to commit suicide. She’s even been known to enter him into competitions to spend a day with a celebrity in an effort to keep his chin up. In this instance she’s gone with bright colours and flowers approach. It’s not working.

Cass – Updated design!

Phew! Ever since I first drew Cass she pissed me off. Everything I’ve drawn so far has been very straight forward, but then I decided it would be a good idea to create a main character who has to look like normal child on first glance and becomes weirder the more you look at her.

She’s the focus of a story which has slowly grown out of the ‘Dreamscapedia’ project. The idea with her is that you naturally assume she is the dreamer but as events unfold it becomes clear that she is merely a dream character created by a man who is on the verge of waking from a 7 year coma. She’s basically the memory of his 6 year old daughter Cassie combined with the knowledge that she would be 13 years old at the time of the dream, information which has possibly been unconsciously filtered from conversations around his hospital bed.

And that’s why her design has been the trickiest of all, it was important that she didn’t just look like a 9 year old, she needed to be a direct mix of child and gangly teenager without looking so weird you’d think I just can’t draw kids. Hopefully I’ve got the balance right though now, It’s the first time her design has satisfied me so that’s something at least!

Please note her footware by the way, It’s my favourite bit. And the best thing is that because she lives inside peoples dreams she can walk walk, run and jump without breaking her feet!

Old icky design! Bleh! (2009)

The old gang

Alright? I haven’t posted anything in ages cos I’ve been busy beavering away getting ready for New Designers.

Anyways recently I decided to update the designs of all of my characters, starting with these 4. (Top left, to Bottom right) Aposse, Everton, Cass and Batholomew, from the Dreamscapedia project.

I’ll upload them individually in a couple of days, perhaps comparing them to their old profile art, but for now just enjoy this quickly thrown together lil snap shot of the guys looking at each other and you.

Shameless self promotion

I’ve been talking about this alot lately, so for anyone hearing about me exhibiting at New Designers for the 40 millionth time, I apologise for the lack of a subject change, but at least this time you can see a little bit of artwork to go with it! That has to be a good consolation prize, right?

If you’d like to come and see me then send me an email and I should be able to get you some half price tickets!

(P.S, if you don’t come for me then come for the mental painting in the hallway which can poke you in the eye if you don’t realise how close it is …. Intriguing, eh?)

Anyways, till next time, Chow!

Paintings galore!

As promised, some more paintings I finished yesterday. I was originally painting them as a series of greetings cards to sell at New Designers, it only dawned on me after I finished that people probably don’t want to send their loved one a card which is sort of telling them they’re a fat loser. Oh well!

Dream Job!

I thought I’d do a little update as I’m currently powering through my work this afternoon and it’s getting me all psyched up.

I’m currently working on a self-directed project called ‘Dream job’ where I’ve been asking people what would they do with their life if they could do absolutely anything in the world. The only limitation I put on them is that it has to be something extraordinary, something really awesome to illustrate!

Anyways, first up is Barney (I mentioned him in the last blog) as I came up with this idea when I went to do some work experience for Jelly and I was challenged to produce some ‘Jelly’ themed work by the end of the week. Weeeeeeell, it’s been a little longer than a week (about … 6 MONTHS?! ….Jeez, What have I been doing all this time?!), but I’m definitely gonna finish it by tomorrow!

I thought I’d tease you with a little detail section of the sketch, remember though this is like the first draft, so it looks a little skank. Now I’m off to ink it up! Chow!

Lea

P.S

Can you tell what his job is? It’s pretty extraordinary.
